Musician and performer, Kurt Bestor, engaged SceneMakers to come up with a stage set for the performer’s annual, 7 day holiday concert series at Symphony Hall, which was “gauzy, light and airy in feel," using simple materials of guaze, candles and starlight. SceneMakers was given a relatively short production time for the event, of eight weeks.
One of the challenges was to create a set which incorporated the requested aesthetic theme, but also the functional challeges of performers in a live concert hall. SceneMakers was asked to design around the needs of the main performer, 4 guest artists, 60 musicians, sound and musical equipment, on a stage relatively shallow in depth, with no fly space and no proscenium. Move-in and rehearsal time were also very short and demanding.
SceneMakers designed a layered, gauzy look with layers of theatrical bobbinette scrim material, juxtaposed against a fiber optic star curtain of black velour. The entire stage floor was covered with black stage carpet. Orchestra chairs were also covered in black. Contemporary steel candelabra were designed and fabricated in varying heights; giving a repetitive, yet magical look to the stage. To meet fire codes the candelabra were designed to use low voltage flickering lights, mounted with frosted glass pillars. A sea of candelabra were used in groupings among the orchestra, being moulded around the space requirements of the musicians and performers. The set became a wonderful foil to achieve various lighting treatments. It was virtually painted with light and pattern to reflect the mood of the musical numbers performed. The set was deemed a success for Mr. Bestor’s show, and was recognized as the ‘most beautiful set ever produced in Symphony Hall.' SceneMakers creative team made a conscious effort to produce a clean, comtemporary set which complimented the extraordinary, award-winning contemporary architecture of the concert hall.
