In 2001, SceneMakers was contracted by the University of Utah to produce a crowning event for the University; celebrating the successful completion of five year, $500 million dollar capital campaign. The Foundation actually raised $760 million dollars, giving cause for great celebration, and gratitude to the donors and community who have been so generous and supportive of the University.
SceneMakers was engaged to produce the entire gala and show, which incorporated: scenic design, sound, lighting, AV, pyrotechnics, entertainment, and staging requirements for a 200 person chorale, 60 person philharmonic orchestra and various guest artists and speakers; plus dining seating for 2000 persons.
The stage set was the largest stage set produced to date by SceneMakers, measuring 140’ x 80’ deep. The space used, was in the Salt Palace Convention Center grand ballroom. While the actual floor space was adequate, the hall was limited on ceiling hang points, with no fly space.
The evening accommodated an elegant dinner for guests, in which SceneMakers was responsible for room décor, special effects room lighting, florals, and linens. The evening segued into masterful performances by several guest artists.
Stage décor included multi-level staging which featured various overscale graphic images and built elements of university culture, incorporated with contemporary images and special lighting effects used on floating kites overhead. Elements included an ancient overscale Romanesque stone column, a steel suspension bridge, rippling red serpentines, an ultra contemporary acrylic and steel podium, among contemporary surfaces on which light could be used to control the effects and mood of the evening. The evening culminated with an electric, triumphant chorale piece which was supported by DMX base sound effects and pyrotechnics overhead. It was hailed as one of the grandest productions performed in the city and “the University’s proudest moment." It was a fitting capstone to years of campaign work. SceneMakers was engaged for one year in the planning and production efforts for this event; producing all elements for this event.
