Neways, a multi-level marketing corporation, specializing in nutritional and personal care products, held an international marketing conference , whose theme was centered around the spirit of the ancient Olympic Games. SceneMakers was engaged to produce a dramatic stage set which supported and reinforced the conference theme.
An opening video produced among the actual ruins of ancient Greece, featured the company president, talking about the noble nature and spirit of the ancient games, culminating in a powerful image of the flames of the Olympic torch. As the giant rear projection screens showed the images of fire, a silver lamé waterfall curtain slowly rose, revealing the silouette of the ruins of ancient Greece, against a sky of cobalt and magenta. The set consisted of a 1/3 scale model of an ancient Parthenon-type structure, and a stepped platform with an overscale column, supporting a 10 ft. diameter bronze cauldron. Tall greek cypress trees were also placed among the ruins.
As music of Olympic fanfare was played, an actual Olympian, Butch Reynolds, ran an Olympic torch 100 yards through the center aisle of the audience, running up onto the stage, pausing to face the audience, then lighting the enormous cauldron which burned with faux flame for 3 days of the conference.
The conference theme required a traditional, more historical set. SceneMakers was pleased to produce from start to finish, all scenic elements from scratch. SceneMaker’s production team wanted the set to appear aged, with layers of patination. Slabs of bead foam were used to produce stone elements. A 120’ x 20’ h. white cyc was used as a background for silouette lighting. Five torches were created with flickering faux flame. The giant cauldron required special engineering and testing to create the right effect of actual flame, on stage. The set needed to be a working set with multiple entry points and structural points for staging of groups and speakers.
Neways was exceptionally pleased with the outcome of the staging, and felt that it supported their motivational efforts for conference attendees.
