SceneMakers production crew was engaged by Children’s Miracle Network and Newport Productions to produce seven made-for-television stage and room sets, to cover 10 days of television taping at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The sets produced, needed to accommodate: two interview sets with celebrities, sports figures and Olympic athletes, a 1200 person awards dinner and gala for sponsors Delta Airlines, WalMart and IOF, a rock concert evening, and a special presentation set for Dairy Queen, a major sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network, a ‘red carpet’ celebrity set, and a conference stage and educational set.
With subtropical heat, humidy and changing weather, it was determined that taping would be done indoors at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort. Hotel ballrooms served as sound stages, with multiple sets and concurrent taping sessions, SceneMakers worked within the physical constraints and restrictions of the meeting and ballroom spaces. Rigging points were limited, and many of the sets required total floor support. All sets had to be designed modularly, to accommodate on site changes and movement during taping to support camera angles. Because the output of the finished video footage would be shown over a 36 hour window of telethon type programming, it was vital that the sets each looked different to pique audience interest. It was important however, on two of the sets, which established location for the program, that visual elements and icons of Walt Disney World be used; this included the appearance that part of the program was being taped on an exterior location in an actual Disney park. Disney was a major supporter of the client’s efforts and a sponsor. SceneMakers worked with Disney marketing to assure that images for the set were used in compliance with Disney standards.
SceneMakers produced a 60’ x 40’ x 20’h. set for a rock concert stage, featuring large contemporary fabric and steel sculptures, which were lighted with various lighting effects that mirrored the music of the evening. Another large set that was mounted on the same stage was for a celebrity studded awards gala evening, hosted by Larry King. SceneMakers was also responsible for ballroom décor, florals and linens.
Logistics for transportation, local crew labor, coordination with lighting and film crew, and design planning, were handled by SceneMakers. Since this was the first year for the consolidated taping efforts, SceneMakers was also helpful in assisting Children’s Miracle Network, establish a reasonable working budget model for the work, as a benchmark for future years. The outcome of this project was well received. Children’s Miracle Network was pleased with the overall coordination and production efforts of SceneMakers, as well as their creative efforts.
